QSUM was established in the year 2005 in the United Arab Emirates and we are proudly celebrating our 15th anniversary this year. The aim of QSUM is to interconnect all graduate quantity surveyors passed out from the Department of Building Economics of the University of Moratuwa and working and residing in United Arab Emirates. Currently, we have a membership of more than 300 members in UAE, from Batch No 1 to 29.
QSUM acts as a collective and dynamic group in achieving professional, personal, social, and cultural aspirations of the members of QSUM, and the society at large. The members of QSUM have earned a great reputation in the UAE construction industry by their excellent dedication and performance over the last two decades.
QSUM works closely with the Sri Lankan Embassy in UAE and the Sri Lankan Consulate General office of Dubai and Northern Emirates and other Sri Lankan professional and social groups operating within UAE. QSUM has recently joined their hands with the Sri Lankan Professionals Association (SLPA) of the UAE marking a significant milestone in its development.
Over the past one and half decades, QSUM has organized numerous events leaving unforgettable memories to the Sri Lankan community in UAE. The “Professor Caldera Memorial Cricket Tournament” organized by QSUM annually is now approaching its 10th anniversary. The event is usually participated by some 25 Sri Lankan QS cricket teams (about 20 men’s teams, 4 women’s teams, and several kid’s teams), and has earned huge reputation for the professional manner the tournament is conducted and quality of sporting environment offered to the participants.
QSUM has also organized Indoor Cricket and Badminton Tournaments with the aim of providing a good work life balance for our members and giving them an opportunity to divert their time to engage in a sport activity with the interaction with fellow members.
The “Ape Gee Padura” organized by QSUM is a musical event that is aiming to enhance the classical music sensations of the Sri Lankan community in UAE. This goes beyond a musical show and in that QSUM invites great Sri Lankan lyrists like RathnaSri, Dhammika Bandara, and Bandula Nanayakkarawasam to explain and review the meaning of the lyrics to give different perspective to the participants. This event has earned distinguished place in the Sri Lankan events calendar in UAE.
QSUM Get-together organized every 2 years is a family gathering of QSUM members that provides invaluable opportunity for social interaction and appreciation of achievements of our members. QSUM Outdoor Event organized every 2 years is also a family gathering with an overnight stay in a hotel. The highlight of the event is the “Fire Night”, which is a continuation of our traditions from the university. The Fire Night session provides an opportunity for our members and their families to showcase their talents in singing and acting among other things.
QSUM has not forgotten their CSR and organizes a charity event every year with the generous contributions from their members. Some of QSUM’s charity events include the supply of items to school children in remote locations in Sri Lanka like Miriswelpotha Vidyalaya, Udawalawa, donation of adjustable patient care beds to Thambuththegama hospital, and construction of several tube wells in remote villages of north central province in Sri Lanka.
QSUM also organizes an alms-giving ceremony annually to remember their late members. The event is organized with the contribution of QSUM members and is held at “Mahamewna Asapuwa” in Dubai. In addition, QSUM has also organized several Religious and Cultural Events for their members in the past. They include QSUM Aluth Awurudu Ulela, QSUM Iftar Dinner, QSUM Nawarathree Poojawa, and QSUM Christmas Party.
QSUM also don’t forget the professional and personal development of their members and all Sri Lankans in UAE. To address this requirement, QSUM organizes several formal CPD events every year focusing on the development of professional and soft skill of Sri Lankan QSs. QSUM has also conducted events like “Jeewithayata Perawadanak” aiming the personal development of Sri Lankans in UAE. QSUM also maintains their own Toastmasters Club and member discussion forum for QSUM members to gather and improve their technical and soft skills. QSUM also have numerous other projects in progress to look after the welfare of their members and also assist them when needed. QSUM did not forget their members affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and continue to assist those in need in various ways.
