Building Information Modelling - CPD Session No 1 of 2014

A CPD Workshop organized by QSUM-UAE Chapter was successfully conducted by Mr. Disney Paterson BSc (Hons) QS, MRICS, (a QSUM member from the 13th batch) on 23rd May 2014 at the Business Village, Dubai, UAE. QSUM-UAE Chapter is pleased to announce that there was overwhelming participation of more than 140 Sri Lankan Quantity Surveyors practicing in the UAE to this CPD session.

Building Information Modelling is one of many buzzwords among the Construction Industry Professionals. BIM as it is known by many, is claimed as the new paradigm in delivering a project from inception to completion and finally its decommissioning that promises to eradicate inherent problems we have in the construction industry such as wastage and inaccuracies in estimating, and as a result cost and time overruns. Moreover, one of many advantages of BIM is its ability to automate laborious processes. Among these is the purported automation of quantity generation and costing; aspects of the industry that are our “Bread and Butter”. In this context, is BIM our friend or foe?

The answer to this question was revealed at this CPD session in addition to the Speaker’s useful knowledge and experience shared with the audience on the fundamentals of BIM, its implementation, the challenges we would face as QSs, possible ways to gear ourselves and embrace the technology rather than reject it.
